My Story

I am Jim Appiah, an international student from Ghana. I a sophomore am a chemistry major and minoring in computer science and data science. When I was 5 years I got interested in drugs as my grandfather was herbalist and he introduced me to a lot of herbs. This is something common in my family, when it was time for me to get to high school, I applied to the best in Ghana. I was part of the few students selected and there I was part of the national science and math quiz team which became national first runner up. I wanted to study abroad but before that I had to study pharmacy for two years in Ghana till, I got into UNC. I was among the  first international student selected at the nations first  public university for full scholarship. At UNC I’m an honors student and a Carolina scholar.  I was selected to join the leveling playing field, a program to help accelerate growth of minors at UNC.

At UNC realized things became a bit hard and I had to apply to work as an RA.  I was one of the first few RA employed after rigorous interviews. First year I joined the Bai lab where we use gold and semi-conductors at nano scale to create bio sensors. I have also been accepted into the Meek lab . I am interested in organic molecules and the Meek lab focuses on stereochemistry of organic molecules which I believe will be very important in my interest in drug discovery and formulation.
